Communications... Every special weapons facility in NATO had many alternate methods of secure and insecure communications. Many of these systems changed through the years. Going into detail would be, to some degree, either a violation of good sense, or violations of agreements or security violations. ALL communications of any significance to the "mission" went through some form of cryprological encoding. Without a doubt, however, EVERYBODY knew what these monsters (pictured here, left) were for, why they pointed the directions they pointed, what they did, etc...
